On 10 August 2021, my mum — Mad — had a massive stroke. Overnight, she lost the ability to speak and to chew properly. I moved in that same day and became her sole carer. Eighteen months later, she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. She died on 8 July 2025.
Throughout those years, two organisations made an extraordinary difference to both of us.
Café West became a lifeline. For Mum it meant new friendships, warmth, stimulation, entertainment — and the bingo she loved until the very end. For me, it meant a few precious hours of respite each week. As a sole carer, that meant everything.
In Mum's final days, the staff at Sue Ryder provided care and support I will never forget.
That experience made me very aware of two things: how hard and lonely being a carer can be — and how transformative the right support is when it's there.
The Big Push is my response.
